MIAMI, United States. — The exodus of Cubans to the United States does not stop. Hundreds of migrants from the Island arrive daily at the southern border of the northern country, leaving in many cases amazing pages.
One of the last arrivals recorded on social networks was that of a migrant from the Island who was missing a leg. The man, accompanied by around a dozen compatriots, prevailed over adversity and managed to fulfill his dream.
The Cuban’s daughter, based in the United States, gave an account of the event in her profile of TikTok.
“My warrior, my role model, my champion. I love so much. God only knows how much I asked for this moment. Days of pain, suffering, worry but today a great satisfaction. Grateful to God and to all those who made this great meeting possible and helped my father to move forward,” the young woman wrote.
The publication is accompanied by a video showing how the migrants crossed the Rio Grande with the help of a rope.
Almost 80,000 Cubans have arrived at the border since October
Figures from the United States Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) indicate that from October 2021 to March 2022 they arrived at the southern border of the country. 79,835 Cubans.
The statistics released by CBP already exceed the record of people who left the Island in previous exoduses, with the exception of the Mariel Crisis (1980), when around 125,000 arrived in the United States.
The new migratory wave —a consequence of the political, economic and social crisis that the Caribbean country is going through— was unleashed after the Nicaraguan authorities eliminated the visa requirement for Cubans. Since then, the number of Cuban citizens arriving at the southern border of the US has increased dramatically, reaching over 32,000 last March.
