San Juan, (EFE).- A person died when his house was swept away by the floods in the capital of the island of Guadalupe, Basse-Terre, due to the passage of the tropical storm Fionalocal authorities reported this Saturday.
The body was found on the side of a road, in the Peres River area, according to Alexandre Rochette, the prefect (representative of France) in Guadeloupe, a French overseas territory.
The death toll could rise as authorities are following up on reports of several missing people.
According to the island’s emergency services, more than 600 calls were received during the scourge of the storm and twenty people had to be rescued.
The torrential rains caused serious damage to the roads of Guadeloupe, where some roads were completely flooded and the vehicles were swept away, according to the images spread on social networks.
Rainfall has been over 8 inches in some parts of the island.
Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, Anguilla, Saba and Saint Eustatius, Saint Bartholomew, Saint Martin and the British and US Virgin Islands are also under tropical storm warning.
Most of those islands have already taken measures since yesterday, such as the closure of schools and businesses and the cancellation of flights and ferry trips.
The storm is also expected to intensify. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported this Saturday a hurricane warning for Puerto Rico.
For now, Fiona maintains maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour (60 miles) and is moving west at 13 kilometers per hour (8 miles).
