One dead and 63 injured: massive traffic accident in Cuba

Miami.-A tragic traffic accident It occurred around 10 in the morning on January 2 at kilometer 71 of the highway towards Santa Cruz del Sur, in the province of Camagüey. In the incident, one person, identified as Ramón Chávez Águila, lost his life and 63 were injured.

The specific causes are unknown at this time, but local sources indicate that the driver of the private truck with license plate P 020 800, Alberto Cruz Díaz, a resident of the Rescate de Sanguily community, lost control of the vehicle.

Due to the magnitude of the accident, the community flocked to the health center to offer support and make voluntary blood donations. Of the 63 injured, 20 were sent to the provincial capital, including 13 minors.

This incident adds to a worrying trend in Cuba, where traffic accidents have shown an increase in recent years. According to official data, between January and October 2023, 6,965 traffic accidents were recorded, an increase of 12.8% compared to the same period in 2022. These accidents resulted in 562 deaths and 5,643 injuries.

The province of Camagüey has not been immune to this problem. In August 2024, an accident in the municipality of Guáimaro left three dead. Additionally, in July 2024, two police officers lost their lives in a traffic accident in the region.

The main causes of these accidents in the country include excessive speed, the poor technical condition of vehicles and roads, and lack of attention to vehicle control.
