The National Meteorological Office (Onamet) issued this Saturday a warning of hurricane conditions, after the possible passage of the storm Fiona in the national territory.
According to the latest bulletin, the warning with hurricane conditions remains from Cabo Caucedo to Puerto Plata. For its part, the tropical storm alert continues from Punta Caucedo to Cabo Engaño, and from Cabo Engaño to Puerto Plata.
Similarly, storm conditions are maintained in the Barahona Peninsula to Punta Caucedo.
A meteorological alert means that within 48 hours or less, one of the effects associated with the tropical cyclone will affect the areas under alert, such as strong winds, high waves and breakers, as well as heavy rains.
According to the latest report, Storm Fiona was located near latitude 16.4 north and longitude 63.6 west, about 235 km southeast of St. Croix, and about 570 km east/southeast of Saona Island.
Its winds present sustained maximums of 95 kph, and an increase in intensity is expected as it moves away from Guadalupe and passes through the waters of the Caribbean Sea.
Due to the conditions indicated before the possible passage of Fiona, the Emergency Operations Center (COE) placed the provinces of La Altagracia, Duarte, Sánchez Ramírez, La Romana, María Trinidad Sánchez, San Cristóbal, El Seibo, Samaná, Barahona, on alert. Hato Mayor, San José de Ocoa, Peravia, San Pedro Macorís, Monsignor Nouel, Santo Domingo, Monte Plata, La Vega and Azua.
