On the verge of a majority; Morena adds two PRD members to its Senate bench

Araceli Saucedo and José Sabino were introduced to the national president of Morena and later to the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, in the Jade room, where the senators’ meeting is taking place.

A few days ago, Araceli Saucedo and José Sabino were questioned in the Senate of the Republic about their possible incorporation into the Morena bench, however they avoided answering the press and left the upper chamber aboard their vehicles.

Upon his arrival at the Morena plenary session, Senator Adán Augusto López Hernández was questioned about the incorporation of the two PRD members, however, he said that they will be working on building agreements.

With these two PRD members, Morena and its allies will have 85 legislators, which means they are one short of a qualified majority and being able to approve any constitutional reform without the help of the opposition.

Sheinbaum and PRD members contradict each other.

President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum introduced PRD senators José Sabino of Tabasco and Araceli Saucedo of Michoacán to the Morena bench in the upper house on Wednesday, bringing the parliamentary faction to 66 legislators.

In a press conference, Sheinbaum assured that, although the PRD legislators will already have a space in the Morena bench, in order to reach their presentation and adhesion, there was pressure, although she did not clarify what type.

“Don’t think that they weren’t under pressure, they were under pressure; it was a firm decision, with good will and applause,” he said.

Minutes later, in a separate interview, José Sabino said that his adhesion to the Morena party was due to conviction and his leftist ideology, and he ruled out that there had been any pressure.

“There was no pressure of anything, I did not hear (from Sheinbaum) that there was any pressure, there was no pressure of anything, on the contrary. I spoke with whoever I had to speak with, with my family, with the allies, with the structure, I am not forced to do anything,” he said.

Senator Araceli Saucedo also ruled out pressure to not join Morena and denied that there had been an offer from the party founded by López Obrador.

“The only offer is for the country to do well, for Mexico to do well, for Michoacán to do well, the only offer that exists is the only one that has brought us to where we are today, which is our leftist ideology,” he stressed.

Both agreed that they remain members of the PRD, but are attached to the Morena party.
