On Journalist's Day, Arce tells them that they must be "extremely careful" in how they report

A morning meeting with President Luis Arce was the setting for him to ask journalists be careful when reporting. The State Presidency summoned communicators to celebrate May 10, Journalist’s Day.

“Today more than ever, in the world, information is something of vital importance that defines people’s lives, therefore, great care must be taken in knowing how to inform, in knowing how to say, how to report, how things are said, because even the attitudes of many people depend on that,” he said in a short speech he gave at the Casa Grande del Pueblo.

On May 10, 1938, the government of Germán Busch, promulgated the Supreme Decree that vindicates the rights of press workers, related to health insurance and other social benefits. It was a Supreme Decree of Retirements, Pensions and Montepíos in favor of journalists. In November of that year, that decree was elevated to the rank of law approved by the “National Convention”, today known as Parliament.

At present, the Government, the assembly members and the social organizations that support them have a tense relationship with the media.

The executive of the Federation of Press Workers of La Paz, Carlos Salcedo, recalled that although the Government of Evo Morales issued laws in favor of communicators, Until now, the regulatory decrees have not been approved.

December 10, 2012, The Morales government enacted Law 315, which establishes life insurance for media workers, a rule that was modified on August 1, 2014, but so far has no regulation.

This initiative was proposed by the Federation of Press Workers of La Paz, as a tribute to the journalist brothers Verónica and Víctor Hugo Peñascostrangled in February of that year in the city of El Alto.

Another norm that favors the sector is Decree 1151, that guarantees overnight transportation for those who work in the media. After the coronavirus pandemic, that decree was relegated to the media.

“We see them from dawn until late at night covering the news of each of the events that mark an era in our country,” Arce paid tribute to the journalists and said that it is necessary to understand and know “what journalism has a very important social work”.
