On January 1, the new waste separation begins in CDMX, announces Brugada

The president pointed out that 8,500 tons of waste are collected daily in the city, of which 56% is organic – for example, food and garden waste – while 22% is recyclable inorganic such as plastic, glass and cardboard.

Brugada asserted that the goal for 2030 is to reduce by 50% the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. For this, he commented, the correct separation of waste from homes is necessary.

What will garbage collection be like in 2026 in CDMX?

Organic and inorganic waste will be collected on different days of the week:

– Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday: recyclable inorganic (plastic, glass, cardboard, etc.) and non-recyclable inorganic (toilet paper, sanitary napkins, diapers, etc.). Each type of inorganic waste must be collected separately, not mixed, as this contaminates and prevents recycling.

– Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday: organic waste (food, garden waste, etc.).

The head of Government indicated that 150 million pesos were allocated in 2025 to put into operation the waste-to-compost transformation plant in Bordo Poniente, which is expected to begin operating again in January.

At the same time, the installation of two new compost plants is being prepared in 2026 and two more in 2027, to have a total of five plants that process organic waste.

“We see that it is necessary to have more organic compost plants, therefore next year these plants will be purchased for the south-eastern area of Mexico City, that is, so that we can from here, from these areas, transform the organic,” said Brugada.

It is also planned to allocate 200 million pesos for the purchase of new cleaning trucks in the 2026 Budget project for the city, so that, for each new truck that a mayor’s office acquires, the city government will provide another.

According to Brugada, 500 million pesos will be allocated in the next couple of years to reduce waste in the city that ends up in landfills.

“We do not want the planet to continue being the victim of everything we do daily without thinking about it, without reasoning that the waste we leave, if we do not separate it, if we do not transform it, if we do not take care of it, we are harming the planet, the land, the water,” said the head of Government.
