On Good Friday, AMLO highlights "the sincere love for the poor" of Jesus Christ

López Obrador presides over the second country with the most Catholics in the world, only behind Brazil, with almost 98 million Mexicans with this religion, according to the 2020 census of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi). But The president does not identify himself as a Catholic, but as a Christian, a religious affiliation that is increasing and now concentrates more than 14 million Mexicans, 11.2% of the population, according to the Inegi.

The president has caused controversy for speaking of Jesus Christ in his official speeches even though the country is constitutionally secular. “It is not by chance that Gandhi said: ‘I don’t know of anyone who has done more for humanity than Jesus,'” López Obrador said now. The Mexican leader ended his message on social networks with a video of the Spanish singer-songwriter Joan Manuel Serrat while he performs “La Saeta”, a song that talks about Jesus Christ.
