On a hunger strike and without medical attention: the drama of a political prisoner in Valle Grande

Walfrido Rodríguez Piloto

Havana Cuba. — The opponent and protester of July 11, 2021 Walfrido Rodriguez Pilotcaptive in the Valle Grande maximum rigor prison, in the Havana municipality of La Lisa, has been on a hunger strike since July 9, as we learned from his sister Marty Rodríguez Piloto.

The inmate protests against the unfair sentence of 10 years in prison received in retaliation for participating in the popular outburst of 11J.

The woman affirms that she believed that her brother did not call her because she was still without the right to telephone, but she was alerted by several inmates that the opponent had been isolated in a cell for declaring a hunger strike. For this reason, on the morning of Friday, July 29, she showed up at the prison. That day they did not allow him to see him, although they did recognize that the protester was on strike. She also suggested that she prepare a broth for him and take it with her the next day and then they would let her see it.

Marty points out that he did. When she arrived, they took her to an office where the head of the prison, Major Agustín Mora, the re-educator, and two doctors were. The woman emphasizes that when she saw Walfrido she was horrified: she could not walk, they carried him between two prisoners, he was in the bones, his lips were livid, he was completely invaded by scabies and his face was broken by the dermatitis he acquired during prison. politician in Guantánamo prison.

The prisoner’s sister adds that he spoke very low, with difficulty and showing signs of exhaustion. He highlights that, when they met, pointing to the head of the prison, his brother told him: “This is the murderer who put me in a cell without water and without light and without my medication for my ulcer, and it is the same murderer who gave me the beating and he broke my glasses.” To which the officer replied: “Walfrido, you are not going to provoke me.”

Marty points out that Rodríguez Piloto rejected the broth that she brought him, and when the prison staff tried to force her to insist, she clarified that she had not come to convince him, but to support him, “because you have unjustly sentenced him to 10 years. Because in no country in the world is it forbidden to go out and demonstrate peacefully, and their strike is in protest of that conviction.”

The opponent’s sister expands that one of the doctors, appearing distressed, explained that Walfrido was dehydrated and that he required urgent intravenous hydration, but he would not let himself put the serum. She adds that, when complaining to the re-educator about the deplorable conditions in which her brother was found and that she had not been notified after so many days, the military officer adopted a position of victim and in a pitiful tone claimed to have called her several times without success.

Marty Rodríguez Piloto emphasizes that the encounter with her brother had such an impact on her that she had to go to the polyclinic to inject herself with a nerve pain reliever.
