Ombudsman’s Office guarantees dignified treatment of older adults

Defensoría del Pueblo garantiza trato digno de adultos mayores

The United Nations Organization (UN), commemorates this June 15, the World Day of Awareness of Abuse and Mistreatment in Old Age, which is why the Ombudsman’s Office, as the guarantor of human rights in the country, take actions to guarantee dignified treatment for these people.

This date invites the population to raise awareness about the importance of protecting and ensuring the human rights of older adults.

It was learned that one of the actions carried out by the Ombudsman’s Office was the creation of the National Special Ombudsman’s Office for the Protection of Older Adults, which seeks to guide the good treatment of this population; in addition to creating policies that favor their protection and prevention, in the face of possible mistreatment that violates their human rights.

To strengthen this work, the Ombudsman’s Office closely coordinates actions with entities such as the National Institute of Social Services (Inass), and the National Assembly, through the Permanent Commission for Families, Freedom of Religion and Cults , as well as with groups of older adults, organized in defense of their rights.

The Legislative Branch promulgated the Organic Law for the Comprehensive Care and Development of Older Adults, published in Official Gazette No. 6,641, Extraordinary dated 09/13/2021, whose purpose is to guarantee respect for their human dignity and full exercise of their constitutional rights and guarantees.

It is worth noting that the Venezuelan State always maintains a policy focused on defending the rights of older adults.
