The Ombudsman, Eduardo Leblanc González, asked the Minister of Education, Maruja Gorday de Villalobos, to detail in a report what are the protocols or programs that the institution has on issues of sexuality and affectivity.
The Ombudsman’s concern arises after a recent report on the human rights situation in Panama and the accusation of pregnant adolescents, on the lack of prevention campaigns on the subject, as well as the insufficient coverage of plans and programs to cover the highest priority areas, especially the indigenous regions.
In the letter, Leblanc González acknowledges that the State promotes actions to prevent adolescent pregnancy, however, concern about violence in all forms was expressed on time, especially when it comes to sexual abuse of minors.
Leblanc González also asked the head of Meduca, what are the levels of schooling that would start with the implementation, how many teachers were trained on the subject and the number of fathers, mothers or tutors who know about the guides.
The Panama Ombudsman’s Office, based on Law No. 7 of February 5, 1997, has among its fundamental powers to ensure the protection, respect, promotion and dissemination of Human Rights.
