The Ombudsman, Carlos Camargo Assis, He condemned the three attacks that were registered in the last hours against candidates for the Congress of the Republic, two of them candidates for the peace seats in Colombia.
A few hours before the elections to the House of Representatives and Senate of the Republic were held, the country presented the attacks that generate fear among the candidates for popularly elected positions, as among the voters, who are Sunday will go to the polls to exercise the right to their representatives in Congress.
The attacks happened like this:
- Luz Estela Quensa, candidate for the House of Representatives for Arauca
- Diana Hurtado, candidate for the peace seats in Urabá Antioquia
- Ménderson Mosquera, candidate for the peace seats in Urabá Antioquia

“From the Ombudsman’s Office we reject any action against the candidates for the congressional elections, in the first place the attack against Luz Estela Quensa, candidate for the chamber for Arauca and in particular the attack against Diana Hurtado Mosquera and Ménderson Mosquera, candidates for the Special Circumscriptions of Peace of the Urabá Antioqueñ regionor, attacking the representatives of the most vulnerable communities is attacking democracy (…)”, said.
He added “once we learned about the events in Urabá, from the Ombudsman’s Office and in coordination with the State institutions, we activated the protection routes and continued to provide support.”
He also highlighted that the National Protection Unit (UNP), expanded the security scheme for two of the candidates affected by the attacks.

Meanwhile, the delegated defender for the Early Warning System traveled to the department of Arauca to accompany the electoral process, in addition to participating in a security council to guarantee the right of Colombians to elect and be elected.
Camargo Assis took the opportunity to make an energetic call to the illegal armed groups to cease hostilities against the candidates and especially against the candidates for peace seats in the country.
“I reiterate my call to the illegal armed groups to respect the integrity and life of all the candidates for the next elections, especially those who aspire to the peace seats, They represent the communities that are victims of the armed conflict and are essential to consolidate peace,” he said.
