On the occasion of the commemoration of World Day against Trafficking in Persons, the Ombudsman, Alfredo Ruiz, installed the forum Advances, challenges and challenges in the fight against human traffickingaimed at sensitizing institutions, public servants and all people present on the implications of this international crime that violates the human rights of victims and destroys families.
This event was staged at the headquarters of the National School of Public Defense, where its director, Rosimar González, was in charge of welcoming the Ombudsman, the Superintendent of the National Corps against corruption assigned to the Vice Presidency, Dr. Jhoana Ytriago, and the Human Rights Director of the Ministry of Popular Power for Interior Relations, Justice and Peace, Pablo Fernández, already all present.
In that sense, González said that this activity seeks to strengthen the knowledge already acquired to counteract this scourge that threatens people’s human rights and improve attention to victims, as well as coordinate actions for crime prevention.
In the first instance, defender Ruiz emphasized that human trafficking leaves consequences for life to the victim and his family, being a complex crime, planned and executed by organized crime, which is usually transnational. “In Venezuela, this type of practice was increased due to economic blockages and unilateral coercive measures implemented by the United States, where the most affected are children and our youth. This permanent attack has driven people to make the decision to leave the country without first corroborating all the deceptive offers posed by the traffickers, fundamentally from Europe and North America.”
He also explained that the capture is mostly carried out through social networks, so he invites fathers, mothers and representatives to be alert with the content that their children visualize and, although anyone can be a victim, most are women and adolescents, captured for sexual exploitation or recruited by criminal gangs. Finally, he pointed out that the Ombudsman’s Office intensifies the delivery of courses and workshops throughout the Venezuelan territory about the prevention of human trafficking, together with different state institutions, to prevent this crime from remaining on the rise, as well as provide support and guidance that trafficking victims require.
The event had the presentation of the Director General of the Office of Consular Relations (ORC) of the Ministry of Popular Power for Foreign Relations, María Rafaela Suárez, who presented the issue Consular policy response to TDP challenges in the migratory context. Another speaker was the general director of Strategic Criminal Investigation of the Vice Ministry of the Integrated Criminal Investigation System, Edward Pérez, with the subject Protocol for the investigation of the crime of trafficking with persons and other related crimes.
For its part, the National Prosecutor’s 95 of the Public Ministry, Nazareth Landaeta, spoke about the Investigation of trafficking in persons such as transnational crime and their challenges, and the advances in the sanction and prevention of this crime from the Attorney General’s Office. The director of subjects of special attention of the Ombudsman, Edward Ferraza, ended the round of exhibitions with the theme about the Human Rights of Victims of Trafficking in Persons and the role of DDP.
