Ombudsman asks to establish the use of scanners to improve security in prisons

Judith Pena | February 10, 2023

After a shooting was recorded at the La Gran Joya Penitentiary Center, Ombudsman Eduardo Leblanc González called on the entities responsible for the Penitentiary System to carry out concrete actions that guarantee the security of the National Police units, custodians and other personnel working in prisons nationwide.

He stressed that the use of scanners should be established to prevent the entry of weapons, illegal substances and communication devices that are used for crime.

Leblanc also lamented the death of the National Police lieutenant that occurred during the confrontation between rival gangs at the La Gran Joya Penitentiary Center.

In a statement, the Ombusman said that at the time of the personal incident, the directorates of Prisoners of Liberty (PRILI) and the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture (MNPT) of the Ombudsman’s Office were carrying out an inspection in an educational center located in La Mega Joya and that everyone is safe and steps have been taken with the Ministry of Security to guarantee their transfer.
