Ombudsman asks Minera and government to resume dialogue to reach an agreement

With the objective of safeguarding the human rights of those involved in the conflict between Minera Panamá and the government, the Ombudsman, Eduardo Leblanc González; calls on both parties to reach an agreement through dialogue in such a way as to avoid the uncertainty in which they find themselves, not only the workers; if not also the residents, suppliers and all the people who are directly or indirectly affected by the current situation.

The Ombudsman highlights that the residents of the communities surrounding the mining project must participate in the negotiation and prioritize issues such as job creation, economic activity, social responsibility and sustainability so that once the company ceases work in the area, conditions exist for entrepreneurship and business creation.

“We have addressed letters to the Minister of Labor, Doris Zapata and the Minister of the Presidency, Carlos García; to resume negotiations as soon as possible; we are willing to collaborate in favor of human rights, ”she stressed.

In Veraguas, the Ombudsman received a visit from residents of the neighboring communities of Donoso and La Pintada, who are very concerned about the future of the negotiations, which impact their household income.
