Cuban singer Omara Portuondo celebrated her 92nd birthday this Saturday, after sharing the stage with Mexican Natalia Lafourcade at Carnegie Hall in New York, United States.

Portuondo (Havana, 1930) began her career in 1945 as a dancer in the Cuban Tropicana cabaret and since then has accumulated a recognized artistic career as an exponent of the traditional music of the Caribbean island.

The also known as “girlfriend of feeling” said goodbye to the international stages this year with a tour of Spain.

Among the awards he has received during his musical career are a Grammy Award, two Latin Grammys and the prestigious Billboard Latin Music Award in 2005. In 2019 he received the Latin Award for Musical Excellence.

Added to this are his nominations for the Latin Grammy Academy in 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005, and the last one in 2021 for the song “Bolero a la Vida”, recorded together with the Guatemalan singer-songwriter Gavy Moreno.

The interpreter of genres such as jazz, the new trova, the traditional Cuban song, the son, the danzón, the bolero and the habanera premiered her phonogram “Mariposas” (2020) during the pandemic, which was nominated for the Latin Grammy Award at the Best Contemporary Tropical Album category.
