Omar Fernández affirms that the blackout evidences “structural neglect” of the authorities

Omar Fernández afirma que apagón evidencia «descuido estructural» de las autoridades

SANTO DOMINGO.– The senator of the National District, Omar Fernandezreacted to the national blackout recorded this Monday by ensuring that the event transcends the category of accident and reflects structural failures in the management of the electrical system.

Through his statements, the legislator stated that “Today’s blackout is no longer an accident and shows some degree of structural neglect on the part of the authority”.

Fernández stressed that this is not an isolated event, recalling that it is the second time in less than three months that a collapse of this magnitude has occurred. In that sense, he considered that the situation warranted the adoption of immediate corrective measures. “This being the second time that a collapse has been recorded in just three months, the lesson invited us to urgently optimize the delays in our national electrical system”he expressed.

The congressman also emphasized the impact that this type of events has on the population. He stated that, regardless of the technical explanations or political debates, those who are most affected are the citizens. “The worst part falls on the citizens, who do not have to be burdened with technical explanations, but have to pay the price for what happened, regardless of their political affiliations”held.

Although the authorities reported on the normalization of some transportation services, such as the Metro and the Cable Car, Fernández warned that intermittencies that generate uncertainty and complications are still reported in different parts of the country.

The blackout was caused by a “major failure” in the National Interconnected Electrical System (SENI)according to a statement issued by the Dominican Electric Transmission Company (ETED). The entity indicated that the incident occurred in the morning hours and that the emergency protocols were immediately activated to begin the recovery of the service.
