Oil spill affected more than 225 km2 and reached Boca de Aroa in Falcón

A new oil spill affected the Golfo Triste area, and as seen in satellite images, it spread over an area of 225km², which reached up to the beaches of Boca de Aroa, in Falcón state. A new oil spill affected the Golfo Triste area, and as can be seen in satellite images, it spread over an area of 225km², which reached up to the beaches of Boca de Aroa, in Falcón state.

The hydrocarbon waste spill that occurred on Friday, August 16, on the continental beach of Boca de Aroa advanced towards some streets of this parish of the Silva municipality on the eastern coast of Falconia.

Towards the end of the morning, the pools that formed with seawater and rainwater on the streets leading to the beach looked dark and had the viscosity of oil. The hydrocarbon stains advanced to the sidewalks of these streets and formed pools between the town and the sand with the obvious presence of oil waste, according to the report. The Digital Morning.

Artisanal fishermen reported the suspension of all fishing for obvious reasons and expressed concern about the economic impact that the situation may have on them. Not only is fishing affected but also the tourist activity that provides economic support to the population.

As of late Saturday afternoon, the state oil company PDVSA had not officially announced this new spill, nor had it reported on its social media about the impact and effects of this event.

Eduardo Klein, scientist and professor at Simón Bolívar University, showed through satellite images collected by Sentinel, the entire area affected by this new spill that occurred between August 14 and 15.

The Venezuelan Observatory of Environmental Human Rights of the organization Clima 21, in its report Oil Spill Report in Venezuela July-December 2023, determined that in the last semester of last year, 35 hydrocarbon spills were recorded, which was added to the 44 cases counted in the previous semester, resulting in 79 events in the year 2023, a number very similar to the 81 spills that were documented during the year 2022.
