MÉRIDA, Mexico.- In the middle of one of the energy crises most serious crisis that Cuba has experienced, the Government of Mexico exported 31.3 thousand barrels of crude oil and 2.9 thousand barrels of petroleum products per day to the Island between January and September of this year, which represents 25% more than what was exported in the same period of the previous year.

A report of PMexican oil (Pemex) delivered to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) reveals that exports are valued at $500 million.

In total, Pemex shipments to Cuba represent 2.9% of Mexico’s crude oil exports and 1.5% of total oil export sales, as the report itself indicates.

“The sales of Gasolina Bienestar, SA de CV are made under contracts denominated in pesos and the rates in force in the market. “We have procedures to ensure that such sales are made in accordance with applicable legislation,” the document reads.

PEMEX report

According to what is stated in it, since July 2023 Gasolina Bienestar is the subsidiary of Pemex that acquires crude oil and petroleum products from some of the affiliated companies to export them to Cuba.

Last year the state-owned Pemex had sold Cuba crude oil and derivatives worth 6.3 billion Mexican pesos, almost 400 million dollars, a figure lower than this year.

Jorge Piñón, a researcher at the University of Texas Energy Institute, had told the media The Financier that Mexico complements what Venezuela and Russia have stopped sending to the regime.

“The Russians had promised to send oil, but we have not detected a single ship heading to Cuba, while Venezuela used to send them an average of 53 thousand barrels per day, however, since September they reduced their shipments to an average of 25 thousand barrels per day,” stood out.

He also pointed out that it is not possible to know if Cuba is charging Mexico for oil as a “favor” for sending Cuban doctors to the Aztec country or for coronavirus vaccines.

According to a study carried out by the Energy Institute of the University of Texas, the Government of Mexico has sent a total of 7 million 435 thousand barrels of crude oil to Cuba between 2023 and the first two months of 2024. This operation has translated into an estimated amount of at least 537 million dollars.
