Oil and gas production in the country grows 2.8% in June, according to ANP

Oil and gas production in the country in June was 4.353 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d). This volume represents a 2.8% increase compared to the previous month. In addition, it is the highest amount reached since February (4.383 million boe/d).Oil and gas production in the country grows 2.8% in June, according to ANP

The data is part of the Monthly Production Bulletin, released this Friday (2) by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP). Barrel equivalent is a measurement that allows adding barrels of oil and cubic meters of gas.

In June, oil production stood at 3.409 million barrels per day, an increase of 2.7% compared to May and 1.3% compared to the same month in 2023.

Natural gas production was 150.07 million cubic meters per day (m³/d) in June, which represents an increase of 3.1% compared to May and a decrease of 1.4% compared to June 2023. Natural gas utilization reached 98% in June, and 3.05 million m³/d were flared. This represents a 14% decrease in flaring compared to the previous month and a 33.4% decrease compared to June 2023.

The pre-salt layer accounts for more than three quarters (78.7%) of total oil and natural gas production. There were 3.424 million boe/d. This amount represents growth of 3.3% compared to the previous month and 5.6% compared to June 2023.

In June, 2.683 million barrels of oil per day and 117.90 million m³/d of natural gas were produced through 150 pre-salt wells.

The ANP explains that variations in production are expected and may occur due to factors such as maintenance on platforms, start-up of wells, shutdown of wells for maintenance or cleaning and start of assembly of new production units.

Origin of production

Oil and gas production in Brazil comes from 6,551 wells, 521 of which are offshore and 6,030 onshore. Although more numerous, onshore wells account for a small portion of the total extracted, with offshore fields accounting for 97.6% of the oil and 86.8% of the natural gas produced in June.

Petrobras, alone or in consortium with other companies, was responsible for 89.5% of the total production. Taking into account only the fields that are operated exclusively by the state-owned company, production was 24.6% of the total in the country.

The Tupi field, in the pre-salt Santos Basin, was the largest producer of oil and gas in June, registering 787.08 thousand barrels of oil per day and 39.70 million m³/d of natural gas.

The platform with the highest extraction was the FPSO Guanabara, in the shared Mero deposit, with 178,381 barrels of oil per day and 11.64 million m³/d of gas.

Rio de Janeiro is the largest producing state in the country, being the origin of 87% of oil and 76% of natural gas.

Ranking global

According to the Brazilian Institute of Oil and Gas, Brazil is the eighth largest oil producer in the world and the first in Latin America. The United States (12.9 million barrels/day), Russia (10.6 million barrels/day) and Saudi Arabia (9.6 million barrels/day) are the top three. Together, the three countries account for 41% of global production. Right after Brazil is the United Arab Emirates, with a production of 3.3 million barrels per day.
