Ten days after having published the faces of those suspected of trying to assassinate the Nicaraguan opposition leader Joao Maldonado, among whom the journalist Danilo Aguirre Sequeira was fully identified, the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) of Costa Rica, told Article 66 They cannot yet reveal the progress of the investigation because it is an open case.
This media outlet contacted the OIJ authorities via email to ask them about the progress of the investigations into the case of the second shooting attack against the Nicaraguan opponent, which occurred on January 10 of this year in San José, Costa Rica.
Above all, Article 66 He consulted about the efforts that the OIJ may have taken regarding the location of the suspects exposed through the videos and photographs and if requests for cooperation have been made to the Nicaraguan Police or Interpol to locate them.
Likewise, the Costa Rican investigation agency was asked if they have requested cooperation from the Sandinista Police to locate Danilo Aguirre Sequeira on Nicaraguan soil, the only one of the suspects who has so far been fully identified.
It should be remembered that the OIJ recently collaborated with the Sandinista Police in the capture and extradition of the opponent Douglas Gamaliel Pérez Centeno, who was handed over to the dictatorship in March of this year. At that time, the Ortega Police highlighted that they maintain good cooperative relations with the OIJ, within the framework of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).
Fully identified
The address of Article 66in the request for information addressed to the OIJ reminds you that “the Nicaraguan media and groups of Nicaraguan activists exiled in Costa Rica fully identify a person named Danilo Enrique Aguirre Sequeira, who has Nicaraguan passport number C02471819, and was born on March 11, 1980.
It also details that “as we were able to verify in immigration documents that we requested from the Costa Rican Immigration Directorate, and in which it is evident that this person legally entered his country for the last time on July 13, 2021.”
The journalist Aguirre Sequeira is a descendant of a family of renowned communicators. He is the son of the journalist, writer and poet Erick Aguirre Aragón and grandson of the prestigious journalist and lawyer, co-founder of the now-defunct El Nuevo Diario, Danilo Aguirre Solís.
Aguirre Sequeira has dedicated himself to audiovisual production work and, taking advantage of the fact that he was able to join organizations of journalists and opposition activists, he also gained the trust of Joao Maldonado, and now appears in some videos and photographs that the Costa Rican OIJ points out as ” “suspects” of carrying out the attempted murder of Maldonado.
These are the questions that the OIJ says I have not yet been able to answer
As part of the official consultation carried out to the OIJ, a list of questions was sent to it, which the investigative body should be able to answer:
1. Do you as an Investigation Organization have the information about this person, which has been published in the Nicaraguan media?
2. Once identified, have you carried out any type of negotiations with the authorities of the State of Nicaragua (Police, Interpol, Foreign Ministry, Embassies, Immigration, etc.) to find the whereabouts or have more precise information about this person, who According to what he himself has told the media, is he in Nicaragua?
3. Could you confirm for us if this person, Danilo Aguirre Sequeira, also had any connection with the victim Joao Maldonado in a first attack that Maldonado suffered on Saturday, September 11, 2021 in Escazú?
4. Has the OIJ been able to determine the link between Danilo Aguirre Sequeira and the other suspicious individuals who appear in the video that has been released by you?
5. Did Danilo Aguirre Sequeira operate for political motivations against Joao Maldonado?
6. Was this an attack planned by agents linked to the State of Nicaragua?
Although the OIJ assures that “this is a case under investigation, so it is not possible to provide you with any type of detail, as stipulated in article 295 of the Code of Criminal Procedure of Costa Rica,” the truth is that it is questionable, not only that the Costa Rican State maintains reservations about a crime that has already served nine months, but also that it has not clarified a first shooting attack against Joao Maldonado himself, which occurred on September 11, 2021, that is, he is close to turning three years old. in impunity, and that it was committed in a very similar way.
