This was defended this Thursday by the participants of the seminar “Offshore Wind Power in Iberia- Innovation and Perspectives”organized in Lisbon by the technology center WaveEC in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain in Portugal.
“To develop the intended level of wind turbines, it will not be possible to achieve the objectives if there is no articulation of the value chain of the two countries,” summarizes the president of the technology center in statements to EFE WaveEC, Antonio Sarmento.
In this meeting, where representatives of the companies Iberblue WindOcean Winds, Baywa, Acciona, Capital EnergyOrsted and JanOceanamong others, agreed that given the “ambitious goals” of both countries, a better and greater collaboration is necessary or the deadlines will not be met.
Portugal plans to install 10 GW of wind power in March by 2030, while Spain plans to install 3 GW of wind energy in March for the same year, a “difficult” goal.

Therefore, it is also necessary “a better clarity of the processes of licenses in March areas available to install”, specify the energy financing model (how it can be remunerated), improve the infrastructures connection to the electricity grid and involve all the ports of the peninsula, added Sarmento.
These plans also come in a context where the war in Ukraine has increased the need for European Union to be supplied with energy from renewable sources.
“Europe has to be much more independent in energy terms”, an objective that the European Comission it is already clear, and, “since on land there is already a large use of land to install renewable energy parks, the ocean is seen as a border that is less busy,” he added.
The price of climatic changes will also have to be taken into account, which can increase costs by requiring more resistant floating structures.
