The President of the Republic Laurentino Cortizo Cohen sanctioned the controversial Law that allows officials who are elected as mayors or representatives to choose what salary to earn.

This is Law 376 of March 31, 2023, which modifies articles of Law 37 of 2009, which establishes that if the salary that corresponds to the position of representative of corregimiento and substitute, mayors and vice mayors is lower than that received as a civil servant State, due to their status as elected public servants, they may choose to take leave with pay and thus earn the highest salary, for which they must previously renounce the salary that corresponds to the position of popular election.

The representatives of the corregimiento and their substitutes, mayors and vice mayors, may not receive two or more salaries paid by the State, except for the exceptions established in the Political Constitution of the Republic and developed in the current legislation, nor exercise functions other than their position. in simultaneous work shifts.
