In the political and pre-electoral context of 2024, the government of Nicolás Maduro implemented a disinformation strategy based on the sanctions imposed on State officials and institutions by the United States government.

At least 85 contents circulated on social networks about the withdrawal of sanctions relief by the US on Venezuela, according to the study’s database.

Among the findings of the investigation into the sanctions, it stands out that in the content detected through the hashtag #BidenLevantaElBloqueoYa, at least 65 (76.47%) were identified as misleading or false.

“The misinformation trend had its highest peak in the month of April with 34 falsified content, followed by May with 31,” indicated Medianalysis in a press release this Friday, October 4.

The Maduro government’s social media campaign was activated after, on April 17 of this year, the United States announced the end of the relief of sanctions on Venezuela that had been implemented as part of an incentive for the ruler to comply with the agreements of Barbados signed with the democratic opposition in October 2023.

The investigation of Comparison.info also identify two of the narratives promoted: “The economic blockade produced Venezuelan migration” and “sanctions prevent Venezuela’s access to medicine and food.”

They point out that it was evident that these contents were promoted by the profiles of pro-government media and television programs, including TeleSurTV, The Gavel Giving and The Universal.

On the other hand, at least 6 accounts of public institutions were detected aimed “at replicating the disinformation narrative to generate trend and virality between April and May 2024.”
