Official inflation stands at 0.53% in January, says IBGE

The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), which calculates the country’s official inflation, was 0.53% in January this year. The rate is lower than those observed in December (0.62%) and January 2022 (0.54%). As a result, the IPCA accumulates inflation of 5.77% in 12 months, below the 5.79% observed in the immediately previous 12 months.

The main impact came from the food and beverages group, which had a price increase of 0.59% in the month. Among the items that contributed to food inflation were potatoes (14.14%), tomatoes (3.89%), fruits (3.69%) and rice (3.13%).

There was also an important increase in transport prices, which rose 0.55% in January due to price hikes for items such as gasoline (0.83%), ethanol (0.72%), registration and licensing (1.60% ) and new car (0.83%).

At the same time, clothing was the only expense group that experienced deflation (price declines): -0.27%.

The other expense groups recorded the following indices: communication (2.09%), personal expenses (0.76%), household items (0.70%), education (0.36%), housing (0.33 %) and health and personal care (0.16%).
