Official inflation forecast stands at 0.59% in May

The National Consumer Price Index 15 (IPCA-15), which measures the preview of official inflation, registered a rate of 0.59% in May this year. The rate is lower than the 1.73% in April, but higher than the 0.44% in May 2021.Official inflation forecast stands at 0.59% in May

According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), this is the highest variation of the IPCA-15 for a month of May since 2016 (0.86%). As a result, the IPCA-15 accumulates inflation rates of 4.93% in the year and 12.20% in 12 months.

Eight of the nine groups of products and services surveyed had an increase in May, especially transportation, with inflation of 1.80%. Among the items that led to the increase in prices in the segment are airline tickets (18.40%), fuel (2.05%), vehicle insurance (3.48%), taxi (5.94%), subway (2.17%) and urban bus (0.17%).

The second main impact for the IPCA-15 came from food and beverages, which showed a variation of 1.52% in the preview of Maywith emphasis on items such as long-life milk (7.99%), potato (16.78%), onion (14.87%) and French bread (3.84%), in addition to meals away from home ( 1.02%).

Health and personal care had the highest rate in the month’s preview (2.19%), mainly due to the rise in prices of pharmaceutical products (5.24%). Housing was the only group with deflation (falling prices): -3.85%. The result was driven by the 14.09% drop in electricity. The other groups were between 0.06% of education and 1.86% of clothing.
