The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) reported that six students, out of the nearly 145,000 who took the entrance exam for a bachelor’s degree in 2024, correctly answered the 120 questions contained in the test, that is, the perfect score to access the higher level. They are, according to the highest university, three women and three men.

The outstanding students in the selection exam are: Sonia Guadalupe Álvarez Santos, who will study veterinary medicine and animal husbandry at the faculty of the same name. She is one of the 85 who were admitted to that course, out of 3,468 applicants.

José Francisco Ayala Ruiz, who will study a degree in pharmaceutical biological chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry. For this degree, 1,792 students took the exam, of which only 60 were selected.

Fernando Chávez Mendoza, who chose to study aerospace engineering, is one of the 13 selected from a total of 1,000 who participated in the selection contest. Meanwhile, Emilia Christlieb Wiener, who will study civil engineering, is one of the 130 selected, from 1,247 who took the entrance exam. Both degrees are taught at the Faculty of Engineering.

Mariana Yali Lozano Sánchez, who will study medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, is one of the 176 candidates selected for that course, out of 12,466 who took the exam.

UNAM reported that these four faculties are located in Ciudad Universitaria.

Hilario Rafael Mejía Valencia, the sixth outstanding student in the selection contest, chose to study at the Iztacala Higher Education Faculty, where he will pursue a career in medicine and surgery. He is one of the 100 who were selected, out of 5,034 who took the exam.

Through the selection contest, of the 143,427 students who applied to enter UNAM, 129,276 were rejected, more than 90 percent of those who participated, and only 14,151 applicants were admitted.

From Ecatepec to CU

Sonia Guadalupe Álvarez Santos, 19, is a resident of Jardines de Morelos, and, like Mariana Lozano Sánchez, from the town of Tulpetlac, they are the two students from the municipality of Ecatepec who achieved excellent evaluations to enter higher education at the highest educational institution.

Sonia obtained a place in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry thanks to her dedication, by taking the UNAM Admission online course, for eight months.

The young resident of the fifth section of the Jardines de Morelos neighborhood, has the support of her father, an electrician, and her mother, a cook, who have spared no effort to ensure that she and her sisters – the oldest is 20 years old, also a student at UNAM, and another younger one who is in her first year of high school – continue their studies.

Sonia Guadalupe asked the elected mayor, Azucena Cisneros, to arrange for some discount on transportation for students, both in the state of Mexico and in Mexico City, because there are many who travel for many hours and long distances to access an educational opportunity; or in this case, some scholarship, but that it be easily accessed, since currently the process for admission to UNAM is very complicated.
