The Cuban democratic directory supported the statements of Mariana Gómez del Campo, president of the Christian Democratic Organization of America (ODCA), who strongly condemned The death in prison of the Cuban political dam Yoleisy Oviedo Rodríguez.
The ODCA expressed its rejection and outrage through its official Instagram account, holding the Cuban regime for the lack of medical care that resulted in the death of Oviedo on February 11, 2025, in the Women’s Prison of the West, known as “El Guatao”, in Havana.
“His crime was to demand the freedom that he was denied. In a posthumous way, the Cuban democratic directory awarded the Pedro Luis Boitel 2025 Prize, which honors his courage and visible his legacy, today present in activism campaigns in different countries of Latin America,” said Gómez del Campo.
The Odca leader also demanded the immediate release of all Cuban political prisoners and stressed that there will be no justice or future for the country while repression continues.
Oviedo was arrested on October 10, 2022 in Güines, province of Mayabeque, after participating in a protest against electric blackouts and lack of freedom. It was prosecuted in November 2023 and sentenced to five years in prison. According to human rights activists, he suffered several health problems that were not addressed during his confinement.
In Several Latin American countries —Inal Chile, El Salvador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela – posters signed by the “Yoleisy Oviedo command” have appeared, in which the freedom of the Cuban people is required and the memory of the activist is claimed.
The Cuban democratic directory thanked the Solidarity Declaration of ODCA, highlighting the organization’s commitment to the cause of freedom in Cuba and with the recognition of the country’s martyrs and political prisoners.
