October will be a key month for the presidential and parliamentary elections of April 2026. One of the milestones is the top date for public authorities in exercise, as ministers of state, provincial and district mayors, regional governors and other trusted officials, renounce their positions to apply in the LID.
They will have until October 13 to leave their positions, so that they do not use public resources or media exposure that they hold through the official channels of the entities for proselytizing purposes, thus preserving the neutrality and equity of the contest. In that group they would be, at least, the mayor of Lima, Rafael López Aliagaand the governor of freedom, César Acuña.
A day later is the closure of the electoral roll, which contains the official base of the voters enabled to vote. These are the last days that citizens have to update their home. For electoral agencies, knowing for sure the number of voters by jurisdiction is essential to plan electoral logistics, that is, to determine the number of tables and premises to cover.
Similarly, on October 19, the use of the standards for the internal elections of political parties and alliances is approved. There the National Jury of Elections (JNE) will approve the specific register of militants of each group.
Finally, October 31 is the deadline for political organizations to officially register those who will compete in the primaries. With this, those who will be in the contest will be defined. The majority of parties have a single candidate and has set aside the possibility that all their militancy or that even the general citizenship decides on their representatives.
