“It is time for this to change, it is time for these companies to be regulated, it is time for them to pay for their pollution and stop holding us responsible for plastic that is not recycled,” said Nick Leopold Sordo, Director of Oceans Without Plastics.
The Oceana representative pointed out that the plastic air cushions used to ship products in digital commerce are not recyclable and there are much less aggressive options with the environment, such as recycled corrugated paper or adapting the boxes to the size of the products.
In Mexico City, since January 1, 2020, the use of single-use plastic bags has been prohibited, however, the organization points out that electronic platforms such as Amazon have escaped this regulation, which is why it launched an open petition where the public can sign oceana.org – to ask the head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum, to regulate this generation of plastic.
“Plastic bags in CDMX have been banned because they pollute, but e-commerce companies use this same material because they are not regulated.
“Ask the head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum, to lead the change so that e-commerce companies stop flooding us with plastic and are regulated so that they stop polluting,” the petition says.
According to Oceana, in 2021 Amazon generated around 10 million kilos of plastic garbage in Mexico alone in its shipments, while internationally it is estimated that it reached 321 million kilos of non-recyclable plastic.
