Occupation and higher income reduce working poverty in Mexico

The agency explained that in the reference period, the real income per person had an increase of 4.3% at the annual rate, going from 2,745.32 to 2,862.65 pesos, and that the number of employed Mexicans also increased by 1.7 million people.

“In 27 of the 32 states there was a reduction in working poverty. Sinaloa stood out with 5.0 percentage points less, Mexico City with 4.2, and Puebla with 3.8.

“In contrast, Zacatecas, Colima and Aguascalientes were the entities with the highest increase during the same period with 5.3, 1.4 and 1.0 percentage points more, respectively”, detailed Coneval.

However, working poverty in the country at the end of 2022 is still higher than the percentage observed before the start of the pandemic in the first quarter of 2020 (36.6%).

The entities with the lowest percentage of working poverty were Baja California Sur, Baja California and Chihuahua with 15.8%, 19.8% and 22.6%, respectively; while the entities with the highest percentage of working poverty in the fourth quarter of 2022 were Chiapas, Guerrero and Oaxaca with 68.8%, 64.8% and 61.6%, respectively, reported Coneval.
