The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro reported through his Twitter account that he met with members of the Group of Independent Experts of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations (UN), who investigate human rights violations in Nicaragua.

On March 31, the UN approved the creation of a mechanism that allows accountability for the victims of human rights violations committed by the Daniel Ortega regime since April 2018.

The resolution “Promotion and protection of human rights in Nicaragua” that orders the creation of said mechanism was approved with the favorable vote of 20 countries, seven against and 20 abstentions. This proposal had the vote against the countries allied with Daniel Ortega: Venezuela, Russia, China, Cuba, Honduras, Bolivia and Eritrea. Ukraine voted in favor of adopting the mechanism for Nicaragua.

The identity, sovereignty of each country is not being respected.

He added that “Nicaragua does not accept any resolution on the update on human rights in Nicaragua, because they assure that these “lack and are covered by a clearly defined political and interventionist bias, far from being based on a truthful compilation of the reality of human rights in Nicaragua.” the Nicaraguans.

“The Ortega-Murillo regime shows the world its interest in consolidating a totalitarian dictatorship, with the disrespect of the UN by denying the entry of experts to the country,” they emphasize. The Colombian Ángela María Buitrago, the Chilean Alexandro Álvarez and the German Jan-Michael Simon were appointed by the UN to carry out the investigation.

Since January of this year, the Ortega regime has increased repression against Nicaraguans and has prevented human rights organizations from monitoring the situation in the country on the spot.
