The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin, stated that the organization maintains conversations with all the actors involved, but did not specify the names of the officials with whom they speak: “I cannot say more than what I have said,” he added.
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin, affirmed that the organization is prepared to support Venezuela in an eventual political transition process, although he stressed that this step does not depend on the OAS, but on the will of the country. «I work with realities. The OAS is always ready to support a country in a transition process. The question would rather be: is Venezuela ready?” he said in conversation with NTN24.
Ramdin noted that the conversations they are currently holding with all the actors involved are taking place “in a discreet manner.” He stated that the communications involve officials from Chavismo, the opposition and the United States. «It means those who are in the so-called opposition and those who are currently authorities. “We are also talking to the United States about this,” he said.
However, Albert Ramdin did not detail the names of those with whom the conversations are being held.
The Secretary General insisted that the role of the OAS is to accompany, not impose. «It is not my place to determine whether there should be a transition. That is a decision of the Venezuelan people and, first of all, of the Venezuelan authorities. “We have to respect the sovereignty of nations,” he stated. He added that the organization could intervene only if Venezuela requests it and if there is a consensus among the member states.
When asked about the nature of these conversations, Ramdin avoided going into details. «I can’t say more than what I’ve said. It is important in diplomacy to connect relevant people, listen to perspectives and see if we can facilitate a conversation. Our role is to find solutions without creating problems,” he noted. When asked directly if he spoke with the opposition leader, María Corina Machado, he preferred not to give details.
Regarding the eventual reintegration of Venezuela into the OAS, which has been disengaged since 2019, Ramdin expressed his desire for all independent countries to be part of the organization: “I would like all independent members to be members of the OAS. “The best thing would be for the Americas to be united around a single table,” he indicated, although he acknowledged that this scenario will not occur during his presidency.
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin, added that one of his principles is to maintain dialogue even with governments with which there are differences: “I may disagree, but we can agree to disagree.”
Tensions between the US and Venezuela have been increasing since last August, when Donald Trump’s administration deployed military equipment to the Caribbean to fight drug trafficking that, it says, leaves from the south towards its territory. These actions are described by Nicolás Maduro as an attempt to change the country’s regime.
