OAS: High Level Group arrives in Lima to "gather as many voices as possible"

On the eve of the arrival in Peru of the members of the High Level Group of the its spokesperson, former Paraguayan Foreign Minister Eladio Loizaga, acknowledged that they will not be able to meet with all the country’s political and social actors during their stay in our capital to analyze the political situation at the request of the government of Pedro Castillo.

“We are going to dedicate all our time and energy, we are going to listen to the Executive, Legislative and Judicial powers in various of their representations; the government and the opposition; We are going to listen to religious, union, business, professional and civil society representatives. We know in advance that we will not have the opportunity to listen to everyone, but we have the firm intention of gathering as many voices as possible and for this reason we will provide the appropriate channels so that those whom we cannot see in person can send us their points of view in writing. ”, he assured through a video that was broadcast through social networks.

Loizaga added that the members of the mission are aware that “any gesture we make or any word we say will be interpreted by someone as a position taken by the group in one way or another.” However, he stressed that it should not be interpreted that way.

“Nothing is further from reality. Of course, we take this interest with great responsibility, but at the same time we are very aware that the strong mandate that we bring obliges us to focus on our only objective: to listen to the Peruvian people”, he remarked.

The spokesperson for the High Level Group added that they are committed to the task entrusted by the OAS Permanent Council.

“The visit is a visible manifestation of the unanimous support of the countries of America and Carie for Peru. The OAS and its members express their willingness to provide support and collaboration to Peru’s request through efforts that promote dialogue and strengthen the democratic system of government”, he pointed out.

He concluded his message by stating that the objective is to listen to all voices and thus prepare a report before the Permanent Council to evaluate the “respect for the preservation of democratic institutions and representative democracy in Peru”.

The members of the OAS high-level group are:

  • Santiago Cafiero, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship of Argentina
  • Eamon Courtenay, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Immigration of Belize
  • Arnoldo André, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica
  • Juan Carlos Holguín, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of Ecuador
  • Mario Adolfo Búcaro, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala
  • Julio César Arriola, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay
  • Laura Gil, Vice Minister of Multilateral Affairs of Colombia
  • Eladio Loizaga, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay, representative of the OAS General Secretariat and spokesperson for the Group
