The OAS recalled that the harassment at the diplomatic headquarters, where six opponents have been seeking asylum since March, is a violation to the provisions of the 1954 Convention on Diplomatic Asylum and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations
The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) condemned this Friday, December 13, in a statement the siege and harassment perpetrated by State security forces at the Official Residence of the Argentine Embassy in Caracas, where six opponents gathered. They have been asylum since March 27 of this year.
“This siege constitutes a flagrant violation of the guarantees of security and protection that must be granted to asylum seekers, in accordance with the provisions of the 1954 Convention on Diplomatic Asylum and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations,” the institution recalled.

The OAS pointed out that the intimidating presence of armed personnel, the cuts of electricity and running water, as well as the interruption of the entry of food and water, represent an imminent danger to the life and integrity of the asylum seekers.
“The OAS reiterates that the granting of safe passage for asylum seekers is an imperative that must be fulfilled immediately. The refusal to grant these safe passages not only aggravates the situation of the asylum seekers, but also constitutes a violation of international obligations assumed by Venezuela,” he warned in the statement.
Likewise, he indicated that the deployment of repressive forces with assault weapons around the diplomatic headquarters and harassment in general reveals the worst aberrations and violates the fundamental principles of international law and human rights.
The organization made an urgent call to the international community to show solidarity with the asylum seekers and demand respect for their rights and guarantees. In addition, they recalled that they will ensure the protection of human rights, the inviolability of diplomatic missions and full respect for the right to diplomatic asylum.
