OAS General Assembly prepares sentence against Daniel Ortega, this is the resolution

The situation in Nicaragua will once again be one of the main topics at the 52nd General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) to be held this week, from October 5 to 7, in Lima, Peru.

A group of permanent ambassadors from the countries of the continent proposed the draft resolution “The political and human rights crisis in Nicaragua”, where they express their “deep concern” for the serious situation of the Central American country that is subjugated with an iron hand by the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

The resolution will be item number 20 on the agenda of the General Assembly that will bring together 33 foreign ministers from the Americas. In the seven-point document, the member states of the region are urged to implement a “strategy” on the factors that contribute to the displacement of Nicaraguans and their need for protection, including the granting of asylum and other protection measures. , all based on a comprehensive approach to human rights and gender. It also demands the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners.

In point number seven they remind the Ortega Murillo regime of “the deterioration of the country’s economic and social conditions, derived from its actions, and encourage it to accept offers of regional and international cooperation to return the nation to the path of democracy, the rule of law and peaceful progress for all its citizens.”

The OAS also calls on the dictatorship to cease the repression and arbitrary detention of the leaders of the Catholic Church and to guarantee the right to religious freedom throughout the country. To date, a dozen priests, seminarians and laity remain in prison with judicial processes that violate the rules of due process. The Bishop of Matagalpa, Monsignor Rolando Álvarez, is also locked up in his family home in Managua under permanent police custody. Legal experts have pointed out that this is a kidnapping.

“Urge the Government of Nicaragua to guarantee the physical, mental and moral integrity and the right to life of all those who have been arbitrarily detained, and to immediately release all political prisoners, in compliance with the decisions and recommendations of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights”, points out another of the points of the OAS resolution.

Also. They urge the Ortega Murillo regime to grant full and unhindered access to its territory to international human rights organizations in a spirit of transparency and accountability. In 2018, the regime expelled the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OACNUDH), which documented the serious violations of the rights of Nicaraguan citizens who were protesting.

Since April 2018, Nicaragua has been experiencing a serious social, political, economic and human rights crisis unleashed by the bloody repression of the regime against the population that demonstrated against failed social security reforms. That repression left a balance of 355 people assassinated. International organizations documented that crimes were committed in the country Crimes against humanity.
