OAS condemns “strongly the persecution of youth” in Cuba

OEA, Cuba

MADRID, Spain.- The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) expressed its concern about the situation of minors imprisoned in Cuba after the popular demonstrations of July 11, 2021.

Through a releasethe OAS said it condemned “strongly the persecution of youth and their leaders.”

As of the date of this release, the arrest of at least 56 minors for participating in the 11J demonstrations has been documented by Justicia 11J and Cubalex, the organization recalls.

In addition, he highlighted that 26 minors have been sentenced to prison or house arrest and face sentences of up to 19 years in prison.

The Organization of American States referred to the cases of Kendry Miranda Cárdenas, sentenced to 19 years; Rowland Jesús Castillo Castro, sentenced to 18 years; Lázaro Noel Urgelles Fajardo, sentenced to 14 years; Brandon David Becerra Curbelo, sentenced to 13 years; Emiyoslan Román Rodríguez, sentenced to 7 years; and Jonathan Torres Farrat, who is still awaiting trial for an 8-year sentence.

With respect to the rest of the political prisoners of the regime, the text denounces the terrible health conditions in which they find themselves, without access to medicines or specialized medical care.

In this situation are “Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, who has suffered paralysis in one part of his body; Maykel Castillo Pérez, who still does not have a trial date; and Aymara Nieto, a member of the Ladies in White, who has been imprisoned since 2018,” the OAS points out.

After pointing out that “the denial of medical assistance to political prisoners seriously violates the most basic human rights,” the OAS General Secretariat demanded that the Cuban government “urgently provide medication and treatment to political prisoners” and “the immediate release of all the political prisoners imprisoned arbitrarily”.

This same week, the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, met with Cuban activists Anamely Ramos, Claudia Genlui Hidalgo and Salomé García Bacallao.

During the meeting, the opponents denounced the existence of minors imprisoned by the Government on the Island, due to the peaceful demonstrations of July 11, 2021.

At the end, Almagro stated that the situation of underage political prisoners in Cuba and the systematic violation of Human Rights by the regime is “worrisome.”
