The Organization of American States (OAS) denounced that the Maduro government uses political disqualifications to “cling to power”, while a deep humanitarian and economic crisis continues in the country. He called for “fair, free and transparent” elections to be held next year.
The Organization of American States (OAS) condemned the disqualification of Maria Corina Machado for a period of 15 years. Through a statement, the organization’s General Secretariat stressed that “this decision is arbitrary and contrary to the rule of law, violates elementary political and civil rights, including those stipulated in Article 23 of the American Convention on Human Rights regarding the right to choose and be chosen.
The agency also denounced that the Maduro government uses political disqualifications to “cling to power”, while a deep humanitarian and economic crisis continues in the country. He called for “fair, free and transparent” elections to be held next year.

According to a document from the Venezuelan Comptroller General’s Office, Machado is disqualified from holding elected positions, after a patrimonial investigation in which -assured the institution- errors and omissions were determined in the affidavits of patrimony evaluated during the corresponding audit.
In addition, he pointed out that the opposition participated in the “corruption plot orchestrated” by former opposition deputy Juan Guaidó, which led to the “criminal blockade” of Venezuela, as well as the “blatant dispossession” of the nation’s companies and wealth in the abroad, with the “complicity of corrupt governments”.
30 former heads of state reject Machado’s disqualification
For their part, the former Heads of State and Government participating in the Democratic Initiative of Spain and the Americas (IDEA), joined the rejection of the disqualification of María Corina Machado.
“We express our firm condemnation of the Venezuelan regime, as the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States has done (…), to show that the leader of the democratic opposition María Corina Machado is politically disabled, while they persecute those who support it; warning, in addition, that this occurs in the midst of a broad popular mobilization.
