OAS calls for extraordinary session to address situation in Venezuela

SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- The Organization of American States The Washington-based OAS has called for an extraordinary session to address the election results in Venezuela, following the proclamation of Nicolás Maduro as the winner in a process that has been marked by multiple irregularities.

The Permanent Council of the OAS will hold the meeting this Wednesday, July 31 at 3:00 p.m. in the Simón Bolívar Room at the institution’s headquarters in Washington, DC, according to a statement release.

The meeting will take place at the request of 12 member countries, including the United States, Canada, Guatemala and Argentina.

So far, the OAS has not commented on the electionsamid demands from countries in the region that the Maduro regime show transparency in the results that allegedly proclaim him the winner.

Numerous countries have raised their voices denouncing electoral fraud and questioning the legitimacy of the proclamation of Nicolás Maduro as the winner.

The US government said it had “serious concerns” about the election results, which “do not reflect the votes of the people,” it said. Blinkenand called on election officials to release full results transparently and immediately.

He also assured that the United States and the international community will be closely monitoring this and will respond accordingly.
