NEW YORK.- The NYPD has had to pay until July 30 (7 months) the sum of 82 million dollars, equivalent to 4,838 million Dominican pesos, for bad actions of its agents, according to a recent analysis by the Legal Aid Society.
The plaintiffs include Dominicans who have been involved in altercations with police officers while performing their duties.
Legal Aid Society is NYC’s largest and most influential social justice law firm, founded on a simple but powerful belief “that no person should be denied the right to equal justice.” It provides justice in every borough, working to make the Big Apple a better place.
The misconduct lawsuits involve excessive use of force, wrongful arrest or fabrication of evidence, which has cost taxpayers about $630 million since 2018.
According to City & State, the city may have paid $2.2 billion over the past decade to settle litigation related to police misconduct.
According to Legal Aid, misconduct settlements totaled about $115 million in 2023.
That figure is considerably lower than the total released by the Comptroller’s Office, which reported that the NYPD had paid out $266.7 million in settlements in fiscal year 2023.
It is worth noting that Legal Aid counts payments made in a calendar year, while the Comptroller’s Office counts those made in a fiscal year.
