García Luna is accused in the United States of accepting million dollars in bribes from the Sinaloa cartel in exchange for granting protection for drug trafficking
between 2001 and 2005, when he headed the Federal Investigation Agency, and from 2006 to 2012, during his tenure as federal secretary of Public Security.
The charges include participation in a criminal business, various conspiracies to distribute cocaine, and false statements. The defendant was arrested in Dallas, Texas, in 2019 and is jailed in New York awaiting trial.
