Nurses specialized in maternal and neonatal care are delivered to 13 hospitals

Entregan a 13 hospitales enfermeras especializadas en atención materno-neonatal

The National Health Service (SNS) Through its Maternal Child and Nursing Care departments, it specialized 22 nurses in low-risk maternal neonatal health and family planning, in order to establish the functions for the approach in maternal-neonatal health processes that allow increasing the survival of mothers and their babies.

Nursing graduates were relocated to provide services in 13 second-level hospitals of the Public Network that register the highest number of births.

The staff was trained for a year at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, with the endorsement of the University of Chile and the sponsorship of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Project HOPE, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF ), Ministry of Public Health and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO).

During the presentation of: Guidelines for Nurses Specialists in Maternal and Child Health, Dr. Martín Ortiz, Maternal and Child and Adolescent Director of the SNSstressed that this staff will be essential to continue meeting the goal of the SNS to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates in the country.

“For us it is a source of pride and satisfaction that from now on these nurses are in second-level hospitals, to make a difference,” said Ortiz, while urging them to carry out their work with determination and dedication.

Meanwhile, Vilma Deyanira Galán, director of Nursing Care of the SNS said that, with this action, second-level hospitals are reinforced to guarantee mothers and their babies quality care.

Miscauly Rojas, supervisor of the obstetric nurse program, was in charge of presenting the Specialist Nurse Guidelines in Maternal and Child Health, to the deputy directors of Nursing and hospital directors.

Nursing graduates will provide their services in prenatal consultations and in low-risk deliveries at the Boca Chica, Materno Infantil Villa Mella, Bajos de Haina (Barsequillo), Yamasá and Engombe hospitals in Santo Domingo; in addition, Antonio Yapor Heded in Nagua, municipal of Castillo and Alicia de Legendre, both in Duarte province.

In addition, the municipal, Etanailda Brito de Las Guáranas; Villa La Mata in Cotuí and Santiago, Dr. Rafael Castro Peripheral, Juan XXIII Health Center and Bella Vista Comprehensive Health Center.

The event was also attended by Dulce Chahin, representative of (UNFPA); Teresa Narváez representing Project HOPE and César López, president of the Dominican Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Present from the Ministry of Public Health were Yolanda Saturría, from the Nursing Development and Regulation Directorate, and Zobeida Peralta, coordinator of Sexual and Reproductive Health Programs.

These actions are part of the initiatives carried out by the National Health Service in the hospitals of the Public Network with the aim of reducing maternal-neonatal mortality and which includes the training of 31 more nurses this year, to continue strengthening the training of this personnel in the maternal neonatal area.
