The authorities of the Ministry of the Interior detained three people last Sunday in the neighborhood of El Martillo, in the municipality of Calixto García (Holguín), when they were transporting in two motorized 200 pounds of meat from cattle, according to reports circulating on Facebook profiles linked to the ruling party.
The blogger Maikel Hernández identified the detainees such as Marleny Velázquez Pupo, José Felix Toranzo and Abdiel Hinojosa Cisnero, who had allegedly obtained the bovine meat through the theft and illegal slaughter of cattle. “We hope that behind bars they manage to reflect, they are already hunted,” he wrote in the publication accompanied by photographs.
In Villa Clara, meanwhile, Santiago Pérez was arrested, accused of making false reports of cattle theft in the town of Manacas, to then sell the cattle in other communities without having to present documentation. According to the Fuerza del Pueblo profile, the “bandit” reported a missing 30 cows to the Police on Monday, but the authorities already knew his “criminal record rosary” and arrested him.
The authorities also searched the homes of those involved, where they found 300 pounds of meat and objects used to slaughter the cattle.
In this province, a gang dedicated to cattle theft was also dismantled in the area known as Hatillo, which later marketed the meat in the Villa Josefa neighborhood, in Santa Clara. The profile on social networks, linked to the Ministry of the Interior, recounted this wednesday that the alleged criminals “had been threatening for several days and throwing stones at guards and peasants in that place to snatch, through the use of violence, the animals from the corraletas.”
Six people were arrested in the operation, of which three are butchers and three receivers. The authorities also searched the homes of those involved, where they found 300 pounds of meat and objects used to slaughter the cattle.
At the time of the operation, the neighbors alerted the uniformed officers that they had found red-handed to the members of the band, with a team of oxen and a horse belonging to a peasant from the town of Maguaraya. The Police managed to recover the equine and it was returned to its owner.
In the midst of food shortages and social discontent due to the upsurge in violence, the Government has spared no resources to disseminate reports on social networks about the capture of suspected criminals. In most cases, the Police only confirm the capture, but do not offer data on how many people have been prosecuted or what the convictions are.
This Tuesday, the Government admitted that The Prosecutor’s Office is not enough to deal with all the cases that reach the judicial headquarters, and pointed to the theft and slaughter of large cattle – along with drug trafficking, tax evasion and administrative corruption – as one of the crimes to which they are dedicating more resources.
