The number of beneficiaries of unemployment insurance increased 4% in January and reached 48,061 people, thus, seven consecutive months of decline were interrupted.
The data released this Thursday by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS), indicate that the total number of workers who received the benefit grew by 1,849 people.
“The increase could be explained by the impact of the increase in infections, with the consequent specific impact on the tourist season and its collateral effects on hiring,” said the MTSS.
In the year-on-year comparison, the reduction in the number of workers in unemployment insurance reaches 37%, equivalent to 28,529 people.
Almost eight out of ten workers (79.7%) are in total unemployment insurance (38,306) and the remaining 20% remain in partial unemployment insurance (9,746).
Official data show that the increase in figures is concentrated in total unemployment insurance which went from 35,663 to 38,306, that is, 2,700 more workers. While the partial unemployment insurance was reduced again and went from 10,549 to 9,746, that is, about 800 fewer people.
Total unemployment insurance figures continue to be significantly lower than the indicators corresponding to the second half of 2019 (45,300), and slightly higher than the unemployment insurance average for the 2014-2018 five-year period (37,101).
On the other hand, the number of people who got out of insurance between December 2021 and January 2022 it was 9,933, 63.8% did so due to reinstatement and 36.2% due to dismissal.
At the same time, entered the insurance 11,782 people were unemployed, this represents a lower number than that registered in the month of December (13,199). Of these, 6,670 were due to reduction or suspension (56.6%) and 5,112 due to dismissal (43.4%).
“This distribution indicates a change in the distribution of the causes for entering the unemployment insurance in January, decreasing the percentage of income due to dismissal and increasing the causes for suspension or reduction,” explained the MTSS.
“The vast majority of activity sectors show minimal fluctuations. Only the agricultural, construction and teaching sectors registered slightly higher increases in the number of unemployment insurance workers, confirming the existence of a seasonality component in these sectors”, the ministry added.
