“The drop in the figures did not imply layoffs, because seven out of ten were reinstated,” emphasized the Minister of Labor, Pablo Mieres, at a press conference held this Wednesday the 16th. On the occasion, he reported that the number of people with subsidy due to unemployment decreased 12.1% in October, compared to the previous month, and is 42,591, the lowest figure since 2018.
The head of Labor and Social Security, Pablo Mieres, explained that there are 5,869 fewer workers in this situation compared to September. “It is the lowest figure recorded since 2018,” he stressed, adding that the number of total and partial unemployment insurance was reduced.
He pointed out that, in the case of the total subsidy, the reduction was 2,344 workers and the total, 37,857, a lower number than the average per month in the five-year period prior to the pandemic.
Regarding partial insurance, he indicated that they decreased from 8,259 to 4,734. Likewise, he mentioned that since October there are fewer sectors of activity that can resort to this benefit.
The Secretary of State highlighted that the average number of workers who returned to their jobs was seven out of ten, when before it was six out of ten.
He also indicated that in October 15,030 people left unemployment insurance, a higher figure than that registered in previous months, when it was around 10,000, and that 9,161 entered, which represents 791 less than in September.
“These are data that confirm the trend of the reaffirmation of employment in Uruguay,” said Mieres. Presidency
