In June, the state of São Paulo recorded 1,236 rapes, 124 more cases than the number recorded in the same month last year. The data was released this Thursday (25) by the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat (SSP-SP).
The other crime indicators released by the department, however, showed a drop last month. In the case of intentional homicides, the number of cases went from 191, registered in June last year, to 189 this year. Robberies [roubo seguido de morte] went from 13 occurrences to 10, and robberies went from 18,110 notifications in 2023 to 15,630 in June of this year. There was also a drop in the total number of thefts, which went from 48,218 occurrences last year to 45,188 this year.
First semester
Between January and June of this year, the state of São Paulo recorded the lowest number of robberies since 2001, when the historical series began. In the year to date, 101,130 robbery reports were filed in the 645 municipalities of São Paulo, a decrease of 13.2% compared to the same period last year. Until then, the lowest number for the first six months of the year had been recorded in 2006, when 106,000 incidents were recorded.
The records of cargo thefts, according to the secretariat, were also the lowest for a first half of the year since 2003, with a total of 2,412 cases in 2024. Compared to the same period last year, the reduction was 21.1%.
According to the São Paulo State Department of Security, the drop in these criminal records “is the result of a joint effort between the Civil and Military Police, which began to constantly monitor the regions where these records are prevalent” and “outlining effective strategies that allowed the police forces to anticipate criminals”.
Thefts in general, which include cargo thefts, fell 4.3% in the first half of this year, totaling 274,444 occurrences.
Data released today by the Department of Security also pointed to a drop in cases of intentional homicides [ou intencionais] registered throughout the state. According to the SSP, 1,234 intentional homicides were reported in the first six months of this year, 92 cases less than in the same period last year.
There was also a drop in the total number of rapes, with 7,102 cases occurring in the first half of this year. Last year, there were 7,188 occurrences throughout the state.
Regarding femicides, which began to be reported separately this year, the Women’s Defense Departments (DDM) registered 121 cases in the first half of the year. In June alone, 13 occurrences of this type were reported, most of them in the interior of São Paulo.
The only one of these indicators that showed growth in the half-year comparison was robberies, which went from 78 occurrences last year to 89 so far this year.
