Number of confirmed deaths due to rain in Greater Recife is 44

The number of deaths due to heavy rains that hit the metropolitan region of Recife reached 44 this Sunday (29). The update was made by the entourage of federal government ministers who were sent by President Jair Bolsonaro to the state to assist those affected. During a press conference, the Minister of Regional Development, Daniel Ferreira, also confirmed that there were 56 cases of missing people, 25 injured, 3,957 homeless and 533 displaced.

Ferreira said he had contacted Recife city and state authorities to make federal government teams available to help with the rescue work.

“A team from the National Civil Defense will remain here as long as the situation demands to assist local authorities in the next steps”, he informed.

In addition to Daniel Ferreira, the ministers of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, of Citizenship, Ronaldo Bento, and of Tourism, Carlos Brito, are also part of the entourage.

According to the city of Recife, the warning of heavy rains this weekend continues. The state Civil Defense advises residents of risk areas to leave hills and slopes and seek safe shelter.
