On the occasion, Deputy Nicolás Viera consulted the President of the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ), Dr. John Pérez, about the future of the Peace Courts in the interior of the country, taking into account that in August 2021 the Supreme Court issued an Acordada where the closure of 20 courts of the interior was determined.
After acknowledging the “error”, the then President of the SCJ, Dr. Tabaré Sosa, indicated that there would be 4 courts to close: Sauce, Castillos, Rodríguez and Nueva Helvecia.
In this Rendering of Accounts, the Judiciary requested $17,025,301 “for Sectional Justices of the Peace in the interior of the country” to finance its continuity. The Executive Power did not contemplate this request in the project that is being studied in the Chamber of Deputies.
“The Peace Courts in the interior of the country are at risk because the Executive Power decided not to give resources to the Judiciary to stop the closure,” said Deputy Nicolás Viera.
“If the resources do not appear, as of January 1, 2023, surely the Supreme Court of Justice will have no other alternative than to suppress these Justice of the Peace, among them the one in Nueva Helvecia,” Viera stressed.
“We assume the commitment to be able to get that money because it is essential for the life of the communities in the interior of the country. Obtaining these resources depends on the political will of the government”, concluded the legislator.
