Notable archaeological finds

Archeology is a methodology that has allowed and allows discoveries about past events and societies, through these studies, to compare lifestyles with the present, evaluate the differences and draw conclusions about how knowing what happened yesterday helps or would help to understand or live better our today.

Today it is information that in Chile they found by chance the skeletal remains of an ancient inhabitant of a pre-Hispanic culture. At first it was announced that it was a chinchorro mummy, but experts believe that it belonged to an African culture.

Human bone remains and textile fragments attributed to an ancient pre-Hispanic culture have been found by chance during a family outing on a beach in Arica, more than 2,000 km north of Santiago de Chile.

Chinchorro culture is the name given to a group of fishermen who inhabited the coast of the Atacama desert between 7020 and 1500 BC. C., from Ilo (Peru) in the north to Antofagasta (Chile) in the south.

According to the first reports in the local media, the bones found were attributed to a mummy from the Chinchorro culture, which inhabited the area between 7,000 BC and 1,500 BC.

It is events like these that give us hope and get to know past cultures well that can help us understand each other well and emulate conditions in our today that seem to be taking references from yesterday due to the distortions of life that we are creating and putting into practice with the technologies and connections. Seeing our origins in perspective allows us to understand ourselves better.

great finds

Today thanks to archeology we have and we know that after the analyzes carried out, the officials of the Council of National Monuments (CMN) determined that these are between 1,200 and 1,500 AD. C, and that they would be part of the pre-Hispanic culture of Africa.

History and archeology and their advances allow us to know more about the pre-Columbian high cultures that arose in Mesoamerica and the Andes. From north to south we can name the Anasazi, Mississippian, Mexica, Toltec, Teotihuacana, Zapotec, Olmec, Maya, Muisca, Taironas, Cañaris, Moche, Nazca, Chimú, Inca, Tiahuanaco cultures, among others.

We also know that in the Andean country there are several pre-Hispanic cultures such as;

  • mapuche
  • Huilliches
  • Rapa Nui
  • Diaguitas
  • atacameños
  • and Caucahues

Now there are records of a pre-Hispanic culture in Chile that is that of the chinchorros. “We recorded a series of scattered isolated finds, fragments of textiles and human bone remains, on an artificial slope adjacent to the beach access parking lot,” said archaeologist Álvaro Romero.

The frontiers of knowledge about our remote past are increasingly exciting and allow us to reveal our identity.
