“At a time of resumption of its main international alliances, Brazil will once again form part of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur)”announced the Brazilian presidency in a press release.

Lula da Silva decided through a decree, published on Thursday in the extra edition of the official newspaper, that the largest nation in Latin America will rejoin the group in 30 days, next May 6.

Founded in 2008 -during Lula’s second term as president-, with 12 members and a total population of almost 400 million inhabitants, lUnasur was paralyzed by not being able to elect a new secretary general since 2017 to succeed the Colombian Ernesto Samper.

The objective of Unasur is “fPromote integration among South American countries. integrating Mercosur and the Andean Community “beyond the economic sphere”, achieving “social, cultural, scientific-technological and political integration”, the Brazilian government specified in the note.

The re-entry of Brazil is added to that of Argentina, which made its return official on Wednesday, indicating a possible new impetus to the group.

The conservative turn that the region took after the creation of the bloc and the different views on the Venezuelan crisis weakened Unasur in recent years, with the departures of Colombia, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay and Ecuador, as well as Brazil and Argentina.

They are currently part of the group Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, Venezuela and Peru, which is currently suspended.
